Influenced by his late father Jack Codling who was a national hydroplane champion in the 1970's, Julian Codling decided to take up hydroplane racing in 2005 and the JC Racing Team was formed.
The first powerboat outfit that Julian purchased to race during the 2005 season was a Mostes style hydroplane and was powered by a 350cc Konig engine.
Having previously competed in motocross, Julian was used to speed but laying down in a hydroplane with one hand on the throttle and the other on the steering wheel was a completely new exhilarating experience. Julian also had to get used to operating the stack pedal, which is operated by foot, (similar to a clutch on a car) which kicks the exhaust pipes in and out on the engine to give the boat maximum drive out of the corners.
The first season was to be a steep learning curve as Julian competed on the local circuit at Oulton Broad getting to grips with how to race and set up hydroplanes, picking up information and advice from fellow hydroplane racing drivers both past and present.
As the season progressed Julian became more confident with the boat and the driving style required to race hydroplanes resulting in lap times improving on a weekly basis.
